Ziya, The Oberoi Nariman Point

Address: The Oberoi, Mumbai, Nariman Point, Mumbai – 400021
Telephone:022 66326210

About the Restaurant

Ziya is the sophisticated Indian restaurant at The Oberoi, Mumbai, serving modern interpretations of Indian cuisine.  The restaurant’s name is derived from the word diya, which means “glow, light, and splendour.”  With this in mind, the interiors have been carefully designed to reflect the name.  The restaurant also celebrates the return of the prodigal Chef Vineet Bhatia, the first Indian chef to be awarded a Michelin star.

Dining at Ziya is a veritable feast for the senses.  Upon arrival, guests are greeted by a stunning series of screens or jaali, in delicate gold leaf and sweeping views of the ocean.  Diners can watch the chefs at work in the glass-enclosed show kitchen.

At Ziya, Chef Vineet and his team invite guests to enjoy an haute dining experience, by offering evolved Indian cuisine.  International ingredients are paired with the tastes of traditional India, resulting in modern preparations with bold flavours, presented in a contemporary style.  All dishes are pre-plated and the emphasis is on maintaining individual sets of flavours.

Chef Renji Raju

Born in Pune, the culture capital of Maharashtra, Renji Raju always aspired to be a chef and pursued his education diligently to successfully don the chef’s toque. On completion of higher secondary school in Pune, he pursued cookery for two years and graduated from the Maharashtra State Board to join the Institute of Hotel Management, Pune, followed by joining the two year programme at The Oberoi Centre for Learning and Development in New Delhi.

During his years at The Oberoi Centre for Learning and Development, Chef Renji trained at The Oberoi Grand, Kolkatta and The Oberoi, Mumbai before becoming Kitchen Executive at Wildflower Hall, Shimla in 2003. A diligent learner with a focused mind, he rose to become Senior Kitchen Executive at The Oberoi Amarvilas, Agra and in 2005, travelled to the Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok to lead the opening of the Indian restaurant at that hotel.

In 2008, Renji returned to Mumbai as Senior Sous Chef at The Oberoi, Mumbai and has since then been an inspiration to his team of chefs. Fond of challenges, he lent his expertise during the launch of Raj Mahal, at The Oberoi Raj Vilas in Jaipur and returned to successfully lead the launch of Maya, the Indian restaurant at Trident, Bandra Kurla, Mumbai.

2010 gave Renji the opportunity to travel to London to hone his expertise under the guidance of twice Michelin-starred Chef Vineet Bhatia, and return to launch the city’s first contemporary Indian restaurant, Ziya at The Oberoi, Mumbai. Pivotal in leading the team at Ziya, he regales palates with novel innovations and contemporary flavours, showcasing the versatile characteristic of Indian cuisine.
